MENTORING: Global Entrepreneurship Week. Ideal opportunity to share how valuable a Mentor is to help you along your road to success as an entrepreneur, business owner or leader.
Mentee Quote: “The knock on effect of that greater clarity has been a more detailed action plan, this one action has led to results that I could not have believed possible prior to working with Valerie. As a result of this not only have we developed new products and services but we have been approached by a European market leader to assist them enter markets in the UK France and Spain. This is as a direct result of work that we have carried out with Valerie.”
For Mentees, these are the basics and if you are fortunate enough to strike it lucky with the right Mentor for you, you’ll get so much more!
It’s vital to choose a Mentor who has broad life and business experience as well as experience for any specific, technical or other support that you want or need. They also need to be a good listener and believe in you and your dreams, able to inspire, motivate and brainstorm with you for positive outcomes. They help keep you on your track while still enabling you to bounce ideas and explore further possibilities while providing constructive feedback. They are not with you to do your work for you but should be able to shine a light on what you need, share relevant experience and learning, plus connect you with resources, information, people and further help. They will support you to the best of their ability but will expect you to do your part too.
Many opportunities exist to find an experienced Mentor for entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders. Apart from individual Mentors, who specialise and market themselves as such and whose mentoring occupation is drawn from their own wide ranging career, business and leadership positions and experience, Mentors are to be found or provided by a range of organisations. These include: the Association of Business Mentors, Enterprise Nation, The King’s Trust, Shell Livewire, Young Enterprise, Primary Enterprise, the UK Government’s Help to Grow Management programme, the University of Nottingham’s Ingenuity Impact programme, Idea to Enterprise and more
Some cities, such as Hull, have their own Youth Enterprise Scheme that provides Mentors for start-ups.
ABM, The Association of Business Mentors, holds annual National Mentoring Matters Awards to select and celebrate the best UK Mentors.
