Mentee Karen Williams OBE transitioned, after an interlude from selling the successful family enterprise, to Co-Found and become CEO of the Buddy Bag Foundation, an essential charity, a most deserving worthy cause providing little “bags of love”, helping children in crisis, who have been removed from their homes into emergency care due to domestic violence, abuse, or other reasons. Celebrating 10 years in December 2025 – when an ambition to source and pack 200 Buddy Bags for children who so desperately need them has already reached over 70,000 thanks to their army of volunteers, supporters and suppliers!
At a crossroads after selling the family business, Karen worked with Valerie Dwyer to create her first holistic Vital Vision Blueprint™ and, having achieved everything in that version, came back to refresh her Vision. Within it there appeared a ‘Foundation’, which neither could explain at the time. Read on the website what happened in Australia. Suffice to say that during the journey of realising her big vision, the right connections and resources helped establish The Buddy Bag Foundation, including with global giving initiative B1G1 @PaulDunn and @MasamiSato and along the way accolades for incredible achievements by Karen, her team, their volunteers and supporters have accrued including The Queen’s Award for Volunteers, the ‘Points of Light’ Award from then Prime Minister Teresa May, Awards recognition by the Lorraine tv programme, an OBE from the Queen for Karen Williams, and most recently being appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands
Life and business (and charity) have their twists and turns. A Mentor’s role is not always hands on and not all of the time but with the right relationship, they will always be there when needed, especially in periods of change.
The Right Mentor as a listener to your deepest desires, a steadying influence, an objective observer, a sounding board, a connector to people and resources, a guide, a co-conspirator even. Someone you can trust to tell you what you need to know without bias and if they don’t have the answer, they will say so and either find you what you want or guide you to it! They are not there for themselves, but for you and your achievement is the source of their greatest satisfaction and reward.
