A solicitor from Sheffield, who tirelessly works to help inspire young people in the area, has become the Extraordinary Woman of the Year 2010 at a national awards ceremony.
Nikki Sharpe, a personal injury lawyer at Thompsons solicitors, who was given up for adoption at birth and then suffered an abusive childhood, managed to overcome these difficulties to achieve her dream of becoming a solicitor.She also founded the social enterprise “Youth Can Achieve” and devotes her time helping disadvantaged and disaffected youngsters, giving them hope, inspiration and support to turn their lives around.
Her selfless work caught the judges’ attention and she not only won the Extraordinary Personal Contribution category, but then went on to win the coveted overall Extraordinary Woman of the Year award.
Receiving her awards, Nikki said: “I am completely overwhelmed and so grateful. I can’t tell you what a life-changing day this has been for me.There are so many inspirational women here. I have been amazed at the stories I’ve heard and really didn’t feel as if I should be here at all.
I’ve turned my life around and done something positive.I have discovered I have a gift to both inspire and help young people. I feel it’s my duty to help them because they rely on me.Thank you so much.”
Extraordinary Women organiser Vicki Espin, and Director of corporate coaching company CECO said: “We were blown away by the support the awards have had this year.Nominations were up by 40% and the quality of entrants has been tremendous. Nikki said to me afterwards that we had changed her life!I replied that it was the other way around!She has changed ours and others’ lives.
I can say, hand on heart, that every single person attending the Extraordinary Women conference has gone away feeling truly inspired by the amazing stories we’ve heard. It’s just going to continue growing – and we’ve already set a date for next year!”
Extraordinary Women, a not-for-profit organisation, also raised £2000 for the NSPCC, their chosen charity for 2010.
The Extraordinary Women conference and awards ceremony was held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham on Tuesday 18th May, 2010.Over 100 women (and one or two men!) were in attendance.
Next year’s event is set to take place on Tuesday 10th May, 2011 – and organisers say they’ve already received bookings a year in advance from women who simply don’t want to miss out!
